Mr. Farmer is a pioneering Sri Lankan value-added agro-food business brand that operates under the umbrella of Janatha Govi Samagama Limited Khaththewela in Bandarawela. The company's unique approach involves collaboration with 235 farmers as shareholders and 13 board members. This cooperative structure empowers local farmers and aims to address a crucial societal challenge - the lack of fair compensation for their agricultural efforts.

One of the key issues the company seeks to tackle is the reduced value that farmers receive for their crops due to market saturation from imported agricultural products from neighboring countries like India and Pakistan. Additionally, the absence of viable alternatives, such as value-adding businesses within Sri Lanka, has further contributed to this predicament.

This unfavorable situation has led to many farmers abandoning their agricultural pursuits out of frustration. Consequently, the younger generation is discouraged from continuing the farming tradition and instead seeks alternative sources of income, such as driving taxis or engaging in odd jobs.

To counter these challenges, Janatha Govi Samagama Kahaththewela Limited was established, supported by the Small Agricultural Partnership Program (SAPP), International Fund for Agricultural Development ( IFAD) & the Government of Sri Lanka. This initiative includes a modern manufacturing facility capable of producing high-quality frozen French fries using locally harvested potatoes. By utilizing homegrown produce, the company ensures that its products are both fresh and flavorful.

Notably, this endeavor is expected to benefit a substantial number of farmers - a total of 548 individuals - and generate numerous societal opportunities. Moreover, the initiative contributes to preserving the country's foreign reserves, which is particularly significant during uncertain economic times.

The central belief of Mr. Farmer is that this approach will grant local farmers the rightful compensation and pricing for their produce. This increased income can serve as an encouragement for them to persist in their farming endeavors with renewed confidence. Furthermore, by establishing a stable market for their crops, farmers can look forward to a more secure future and an improved standard of living.
